Week 1:
Anatomy
HERE’S WHAT YOU’LL MASTER…
Learn what makes dog anatomy unique, and how to handle the HUGE array of different types and breeds with a simple formula for breaking down the structures. Practice sketching and getting familiar with the structure and anatomy so you can capture ANY dog.
Week 2:
Color
HERE’S WHAT YOU’LL MASTER…
Learn how to see and mix colors for fur of any color, in any environment. White, black, brown, or anything in between… In this lesson you’ll discover how to make any dog look lifelike and colorful! We’ll cover the basics and go on to how to masterfully capture any colors that you might encounter.
Week 3:
Texture
HERE’S WHAT YOU’LL MASTER
Texture can be one of the most intimidating things when painting animals. In this lesson you’ll learn tips and tricks for handling any fur texture, from smooth and shiny to curly, shaggy or rough. With the tools you’ll master here, you’ll be equipped for anything.
Week 4:
Expression
Here’s What You’ll Master:
Making your portraits come to life is more than just a good likeness… If you want to capture personality and emotion, it all comes down to expression — and dogs are no different! In this module, we’ll explore how dogs emote and express and learn how to capture all that sweet personality in our paintings.
Week 5:
Composition
HERE’S WHAT YOU’LL MASTER
Lastly, a good portrait requires a good composition. In this lesson, we’ll explore what makes a good composition, specifically when dealing with dog portraits. We’ll discuss cropping, backgrounds, color combos, and more to create strong and compelling portraits.
Week 6:
Final Painting
HERE’S WHAT YOU’LL MASTER
Once we’ve mastered all five lessons, you’re ready to put it together into your very own final painting. Follow along with my demo or choose your own reference to work from! You’ll have a dedicated week to work on your painting before our final reviews.

Once you enroll, I’ll send you the full materials list, but if you’ve oil painted or taken a class with me in the past, you probably have everything you need!
We’ll meet twice per week, and some of your work can be done along with me during the live sessions. Outside of that, just commit what time you have, whether it’s a few minutes a day, or a longer session once or twice a week.
Some of what I’ll teach here will apply to other mediums, but we’ll be talking specifically about oil painting techniques in this course. I recommend using traditional oils or water-mixable oils rather than acrylics or another medium.
Beginners are welcome! I’ll help and guide you through anything you need to know along the way. Just remember, if you’re a total newbie to painting and/or oils, be kind and patient with yourself! You can do it!
